Meet Abdi Siad

Candidate for the Madison Common Council District 7

I have proudly called District 7 home for the past 26 years, where I’ve shared a life of community, growth, and gratitude with my wife, Nasra Wehelie, and our accomplished children.

My journey began in Somalia, where I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Somali National University in Mogadishu. In 1981, I immigrated to the United States in pursuit of a brighter future, a goal I’ve been fortunate to achieve thanks to the countless opportunities this country has provided.

Continuing my education in the U.S., I earned a master’s degree in animal science from Southern Illinois University and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison—a university my wife and three of our children also proudly attended.

Life has shaped me into an eternal optimist who believes in the power of opportunity and inclusivity. Inspired by my wife Nasra’s commitment to building an equitable community as the current District 7 Alder, I have dedicated my life to uplifting others. As an immigrant, I understand the challenges of navigating a new environment and the importance of community support. Over the years, I’ve been honored to assist Somali newcomers in Madison, helping them settle into their new lives and find the resources they need to thrive.

Now, I am running for the District 7 Alder position on the Madison Common Council to amplify the voices of our diverse district and work toward solutions that benefit everyone. With a steadfast commitment to inclusivity, equity, and opportunity, I am eager to continue serving the community I’ve been proud to call home for over two decades. Together, we can build a stronger, more united District 7.
